In a nutshell: the role of Clermont County Commissioner Brad Combs and Jen Mazzuckelli, pictured below, are candidates for Clermont County Commissioner. The County Commission sets and oversees the budgets for each county agency, including the Board of Health, Animal Control, the Water District, County Maintenance, and the Sheriff’s Department.  They look at the incoming tax revenue and decide where and how to spend it. That is power!  The political outlook of the Commission is therefore important; for instance, do you add more policemen or more mental health specialists?  Do you expand a road that benefits a few private businesses or repave some roads that benefit entire communities? The Commission also sets long-term plans for the direction of the county in terms of economic development, which includes issuing tax abatements and setting project labor agreements and language rules for project bidding.  Tax abatements directly impact who ultimately pays for public project like infrastructure upkeep.  Labor agreements and the information required in project bidding impacts things like the contractor workforce, such as minority inclusion, residency requirements, and employee training. According to their official website, the current Commissioners see bringing in new businesses, jobs and revenue as their number one priority. And, while that might not be everywhere in the county, it is happening in enough places that we are now players in statewide and local races. Historically, the GOP has taken the rural areas and the Democrats the cities. Counties like Clermont, Butler, and Warren are the battlegrounds that have tipped the state in the GOP’s favor, but we have the power to change that. Why it matters: When we flip enough voters in Clermont, the state changes to blue. That does not mean Clermont needs to obtain 50% of the vote but rather we need to take a bite out of the GOP’s percentage so that we add to the overall vote count in a meaningful way. The GOP considers Clermont to be a “firewall” county.  This year, with your help, we bring on the firehose. Actions: Become involved in building our community. Attend a meeting, walk in parades, talk to your neighbors, and comment on and share social media posts. Support CCDP financially so that we have the resources to better reach voters. What we do collectively makes a big impact. Be part of the change you wish to see.
