A call for a study to determine the cost of transporting charter school and private school voucher students.

58 years ago, Ohio enacted the “Fair Bus Bill” which required school districts to provide transportation for private school students. The state applied the same transportation requirement to school districts when charter schools were authorized in Ohio. This requirement is a state-signed blank check that obligates school districts to pay a significant portion of the cost of students no longer affiliated with public school districts.

The cost of this state mandate is not known. The Governor’s Department of Education and Workforce Development should be assigned to research this cost. Taxpayers should be informed of the amount of tax money that is spent on education programs that are not provided for in the Constitution.
