Charter school zealots were successful in securing local property tax funds for charters in Indiana. Will Ohio be next?
At first, charter school militants just wanted an opportunity to demonstrate creativity, innovation, and better education at low cost. Charters have failed on all counts.
Now charterites want less transparency and accountability, additional state funds, and a slice of local property tax funds. The charter lobby in Ohio has sent up some trial balloons on the local property tax funds issue. That will be a matter in the Ohio legislature in the coming years or months. The privatization lobby will not quit until the constitutionally-required common school system is completely destroyed. Ohioans who support public education and embrace the public good need to awaken to this existential threat.
