Muslim Cleric Fethullah Gulen, the Driving Force Behind a Couple Hundred Muslim-Oriented Charter Schools in the US, is in the World News Again
Gulen charter schools have a healthy share of the charter school market in the US. These schools have not been without controversy.
When Ohio started in the charter school business in the late 1990’s, the Gulen group was among the very first to launch their brand of charters.
Fethullah Gulen has been holed-up in an elaborate compound in Saylorsburg, PA for several years. It is there he operates a worldwide Muslim movement. He has been at odds with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan since before his exile to the US. The government of Turkey has asked the US government to extradite Gulen several times.
According to a news item in the May 24 Columbus Dispatch, Turkish President Erdogan has declared he will not speak to the Prime Minister of Greece, accusing Greece of harboring followers of Gulen, who Turkey says was behind a 2016 failed military coup in Turkey.

ANKARA, Turkey – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday he would cease talking to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and cancel a key meeting between their two governments, accusing the Greek leader of antagonizing Turkey.
In a televised address following a Cabinet meeting, Erdogan accused neighboring Greece of harboring followers of U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Turkey says was behind a 2016 failed coup attempt, and of establishing military bases against Turkey. Gulen has long denied the Turkish allegation.
Erdogan then went on to accuse Mitsotakis of recommending to U.S. officials that Washington not sell F-16 fighter jets to Turkey during a recent visit to the United States.
