At the time of writing, the SAVE Act has passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is still being debated in the U.S. Senate. Many reports suggest that there are not enough votes (60) to pass the measure, but nothing is certain.
There is a huge amount of misinformation out there on the bill, and it’s tough to know what’s what. If you have Instagram, here you can watch a video of the Ohio State University’s Associate Dean Anne Ralph explain that showing your Ohio Real ID would not be a sufficient form of documentation when registering to vote under the SAVE Act if it were to pass. This is because it is not proof of citizenship. In five states — Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington –Enhanced Real IDs do show proof of citizenship and would be sufficient voter ID, but that’s not the case for Ohio.
