Data centers are all over the national and local news. Organizers from across Ohio are collecting signatures now to get a constitutional amendment on the ballot for the November midterm election. In fact, Jessica Baker, a founding organizer of the movement to amend the state constitution, spoke at our April CCDP monthly meeting just weeks after the Attorney General’s office approved their ballot initiative application. She is pictured here in the middle, with Kate Novak, Vice President of Clermont Young Democrats (left), and Julie Tolliver, Batavia Township Precinct Captain (right).

The petition seeks to amend the Ohio Constitution in order to ban the construction of data centers that consume over 25 megawatts (MW) of energy per month. According to ConserveOhio.com, 25 MW is the threshold between a manageable, community-friendly facility and an industrial scale data center that can use as much power as a small town. The issue is a complex one, and legislators are trying to balance the collection of competing interests involved.
