The Clermont County Democratic Party is deeply disturbed by reports confirming that an American flag that had been altered to depict a swastika flag was displayed in the office of our congressman, U.S. Representative Dave Taylor. The image of the flag was seen in the background in a virtual meeting that included a member of Representative Taylor’s staff. Let us be clear: the swastika is not merely a symbol; it is a symbol of genocide, hatred, and fascism. Its presence anywhere — let alone in the office of an elected official sworn to uphold the Constitution — is unacceptable, inexcusable, and a disgrace to the people of this district. There is no context, explanation, or intent that justifies this symbol being on display in a public office funded by taxpayers. Regardless of how or why it was there, it sends a chilling message to constituents, who have every right to expect safety, dignity, and respect from their representatives. We understand Rep. Taylor has rightly condemned the display, and that the U.S. Capitol Police have opened an investigation. We call on Rep. Taylor to go even further by taking full responsibility, and to issue a public apology. We also urge local, state, and national leaders — including members of his own party — to condemn this display without equivocation. Hate has no place in our democracy. We deserve responsive, ethical elected leaders who represent us – all of us – in Washington; we should expect nothing less. |
