Gov. Mike DeWine has vetoed SB 50, the bill that would have weakened child labor laws by allowing young teens to work longer hours on school nights. Now he must veto the following bills this week, or they will automatically become law:

  • SB 293 – voter suppression bill that eliminates Ohio’s long-standing 4-day acceptance window for absentee ballots that were mailed on time and postmarked by the day before Election Day.
  • HB 129HB 186, and HB 335 – This trio of bills cuts property tax without shoring up the state’s share of funding for public education and local services at the same time. Our property tax system needs solutions, but these “fixes” may not provide broad relief and will negatively impact public schools and local services (libraries, addiction services, and first responders). This is because state funding for public schools and local services is so poor that they have to heavily rely on property taxes.
