It’s easy to understand why voters may be skeptical about the Citizens Not Politicians Amendment they will see on the ballot (at the very bottom, by the way) in November. After all, Ohio’s voters have voted several times already to revamp the redistricting process, and our politicians have disregarded us, violating the Constitution and ignoring the Ohio Supreme Court. Governor DeWine had the nerve last week to announce his opposition to the amendment, despite the fact that he was one of the very politicians to repeatedly betray voters. Former Republican Ohio Supreme Court Justice Maureen O’Connor scolded him in her statement:

“The disinformation from the Governor today is insulting to everyone in Ohio, and especially insulting to the half a million Ohioans — Republicans, Democrats and Independents — who put the Citizens Not Politicians Amendment on the November ballot.”

“We’re done listening to self-serving politicians tell us how they want to keep rigging the game. On to November.”

The critical difference between this amendment and previous attempts is that the Citizens Not Politicians bans politicians from the entire process. It will work, and it will finally ensure a fair approach to drawing legislative districts in Ohio.
