Private school vouchers in Idaho are especially harmful to rural communities and can lead to increased taxes at the local level.

New Jersey based-Public Funds Public Schools and Idaho Center for Fiscal Policy issued a report this month that states clearly the dangers vouchers pose to students, schools, and communities, especially rural communities.

In Ohio, even though rural communities do not now have a high incidence of private schools, they are entering the crosshairs of substantial harm due to the enactment of universal vouchers. The Senate President, the main driver of the voucher scheme in Ohio, is advocating for state funds to build private school facilities in rural Ohio. Currently, Ohio’s mechanism for funding vouchers diverts funds from rural school districts to areas with a high concentration of private schools.

Public school officials and communities in rural areas, on behalf of their students, need to take action to fend off the voucher movement.
