October 19 Columbus Dispatch: Ohio Retirement Systems Seeking a Boost

The three largest Retirement Systems are eyeing the possibility of increasing the employer contribution from 14% to 18%.

The likelihood of increasing the employer contribution in the current political climate would seem to be a very heavy lift. Those receiving benefits from STRS and those paying into STRS may wish to consider that the ever-expanding universal voucher scheme impacts their own retirement benefits.

The universal voucher scheme diverts a boatload of funds from the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) because private school teachers don’t contribute to the system.

The immediate impact of the universal voucher scheme will shift about a billion dollars from the public school districts to the private schools. Those involved in STRS may wish to help ramp up efforts to end the EdChoice voucher scheme via litigation.
