“Science of Reading” requirement challenged in court.

The Governor recommended in his budget proposal that schools implement the “science of reading”. The legislature included the recommendation in the state budget bill (HB33). This legislation is being challenged in Franklin County Court of Common Pleas by The Reading Recovery Council of North America. The Governor’s response to the litigation, in part, is, “We know what works and what works is science of reading.”

The state is defending other constitutional challenges regarding education. The unconstitutional transfer of the State Board of Education functions to the governor’s office and the unconstitutional EdChoice voucher scheme are also being defended vigorously by the state.
