Issue 1, legislative district boundaries, school privatization at taxpayers’ expense, and transfer of the State Education Agency to the Governor’s office all originate from a particular philosophy of governance which is most likely contrary to a majority of Ohioans.
Some folks believe in democracy, fairness, justice, impartiality, and thus in the public good; others believe in privileged class, injustice, favoritism, and thus in private benefits to the point of diminishing the public good. In recent years, state policies have trended away from the public good in Ohio.
Some politicians have little or no regard for the Ohio Constitution in reference to many issues, but particularly to education issues. Article I, section 2 of the Ohio Constitution states that all political power is inherent in the people.
The defeat of Issue 1 is an indication that the Ohio ruling class is out of touch with Ohioans. Issues such as vouchers, charter schools, and the control of the State Education Agency should be put up to a vote of the people. The ruling class is most definitely out of touch with the people regarding these issues. These education issues are of such importance that they should be put up for a statewide vote.
