Education Law Center (ELC) in New Jersey and other organizations suing Oklahoma to stop the nation’s first religious charter school.
A church in Oklahoma secured approval from the state’s charter school authorizing organization to operate a charter school. ELC, in partnership with three other organizations, will file suit against this authorization.
Religious organizations should be allowed to operate within the scope of their belief system. But, when they demand public money to support schools that espouse their unique worldview, the public will demand that their parochial schools become, in most respects, public schools. The voucher zealots seem blind to the consequences of their campaign. In the long term, private schools that are funded by the public will mirror public schools.
