cleveland.com Redistricting amendment backers set to collect voter signatures after clearing Ballot Board
(Thursday, October 12, 9:30 AM | By: Andrew J. Tobias)
- The Ohio Ballot Board, led by Republican Secretary of State Frank LaRose, cast a unanimous, bipartisan vote at the Statehouse Thursday morning without debate. The development is a win for the amendment’s backers, since the Republican-controlled board could have split the proposal into multiple issues, which would have required the campaign to collect hundreds of thousands of valid voter signatures for each one.
- However, LaRose, when asked about the proposal following Thursday’s meeting, said he is undecided. LaRose, a Republican U.S. Senate candidate in the primary election in March, is a longtime proponent of redistricting reform, and privately was sharply critical of how redistricting played out under the current system, records released later as part of a lawsuit showed.

(Thursday, October 12, 4:51 PM | By: The Statehouse News Bureau)
- A proposed constitutional amendment that would overhaul how Ohio handles drawing legislative districts cleared another hurdle Thursday morning and is now closer to getting in front of voters in November 2024. The GOP-majority Ohio Ballot Board, chaired by Secretary of State Frank LaRose, voted unanimously to allow the proposal to eventually appear as a single issue on the ballot—rather than dividing it. That would have required the coalition Citizens Not Politicians to gather at least double the number of necessary petition signatures.
- It took Citizens Not Politicians three tries to get Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s authorization on the language for their proposal to enable an independent commission to take over the redistricting process. But LaRose began the meeting by saying he believed it ‘should be a quick and efficient meeting,’ and in less than ten minutes, the ballot board had made its decision. That brevity—alongside the vote itself—was a relief for the proposal’s backers as they eye next November’s ballot, according to Jen Miller, the state’s League of Women Voters executive director.

The Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC) applauded the proactive efforts of the U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur in her Sept. 7 letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), urging the agency to take stronger action to combat the recurring toxic algal blooms in Western Lake Erie caused by agricultural pollution.
- RELATED: Labor Day 2022: Parade Grand Marshall ELPC’s Executive Director, Howard Learner, emphasized the critical need for a ‘pollution diet’ or Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) plan, specifically targeting Dissolved Reactive Phosphorus (DRP) as the pollutant responsible for fueling toxic algal blooms in Lake Erie. Learner praised Rep. Kaptur’s recognition of the importance of this approach, stating that when properly developed and implemented, TMDLs can be powerful tools for restoring impaired water bodies. ‘The Environmental Law & Policy Center greatly appreciates Rep. Kaptur’s letter to the U.S. EPA. The U.S. EPA now must step up and meet its responsibilities to achieve a clean and safe Lake Erie because the Ohio EPA has failed to do its job well,’ Learner said.
- Lake Erie’s recurring toxic algal blooms have been a long-standing concern, harming safe water and threatening the health of the region’s residents and ecosystems. Kaptur and Lerner are calling for a more comprehensive plan which they say is needed to effectively address the issue and ensure the well-being of those who rely on and enjoy Lake Erie.

- Congresswomen Ayanna Pressley and Shontel Brown. Photo-Illustration: The Cut; Photos: Getty For years, Black women have complained about the possibility that hair relaxers, which often contain known carcinogens, could be linked to adverse health issues.
- ‘I applaud the FDA for being responsive to our calls and advancing a rule that will help prevent manufacturers from making a profit at the expense of our health. The Administration should finalize this rule without delay.’ The change comes months after Pressley and Congresswoman Shontel Brown wrote a letter to the FDA, asking it to review the safety of relaxers, which — in addition to formaldehyde — also have phthalates (a class of chemicals considered endocrine disruptors) and potentially carcinogenic heavy metals in them. While some studies have shown an association between relaxer usage and cancer diagnoses, they haven’t shown a direct causal link, meaning other factors could also play a part in the development of cancer.
- Companies that have publicly addressed the allegations, specifically L’Oréal, have countered that the suits are ‘vague’ and neither legally nor scientifically sound. But concerns linger, and in response to the reported regulation, Brown said: ‘On behalf of women, especially Black women across the country, I applaud the FDA’s new proposed rule banning formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals from hair straighteners.’ The Cut has reached out to Pressley’s and Brown’s offices as well as the FDA for additional information.

The Associated Press Effort to replace Ohio’s political-mapmaking system with a citizen-led panel can gather signatures
(Thursday, October 12, 11:14 AM | By: JULIE CARR SMYTH)
- The proposal calls for replacing the Ohio Redistricting Commission, which currently comprises three statewide officeholders and four state lawmakers, with an independent body selected directly by citizens. The new panel’s members would be diversified by party affiliation and geography.
- Since then, opponents have dropped their litigation against the congressional map, putting it in place for 2024. A new set of Ohio House and Ohio Senate districts was unanimously approved by the Ohio Redistricting Commission last month. That plan remains in limbo, after being challenged Oct. 5

Wisconsin State Journal Robin Vos: Impeachment of Justice Janet Protasiewicz still on the table
(Thursday, October 12, 11:36 AM | By: Mitchell Schmidt)
- If this feels like “Groundhog Day” to you, you’re not alone, as this could result in the third presidential impeachment in just four years. Scripps News Protasiewicz announced Friday she would not recuse herself from the redistricting challenge, and the court voted 4-3 to hear the matter. “We want to focus on what is occurring in office,” Vos said.
- Vos announced on radio station 1130 WISN on Sept. 13 that he had asked “a panel of former members of the state Supreme Court to review and advise what the criteria are for impeachment.” Vos tasked the group with advising him on whether Protasiewicz could be impeached if she participates in the redistricting case after saying during her campaign that the state’s GOP-drawn legislative maps are “rigged.” While Vos had refused to name the former justices, he identified the trio as Prosser, Wilcox and former justice Patience Roggensack in court documents filed earlier this week.

Georgia Dems Virginia needs our help
(Thursday, October 12, 6:02 PM | By: feedback@georgiademocrat.org)
- When control of the U.S. Senate hinged on the outcome of the 2021 Georgia runoffs, Democrats from all over the country rallied to support Georgia Democrats. Now it’s our turn to do the same for Virginia.
- Virginia is the ONLY southern state where Republicans haven’t managed to ban abortion since Roe was overturned. But now the ENTIRE Virginia Legislature is up for grabs in their November election. If MAGA Republicans are able to keep control of the VA House and win a majority in the VA Senate, Governor Glenn Youngkin has already said he would sign an abortion ban into law ‘gleefully.’
Gilberto Hinojosa the Senate just passed their voucher scam bill, Derek
(Friday, October 13, 1:07 AM | By: yellowdog@txdemocrats.org)
- Just moments ago, the Texas Senate voted to defund Texas public schools, throwing the future of the Texas Education System into jeopardy. Add your name to show your support for Texas local schools →→→ Texas Republicans have once again sold out our kids’ future, all to appease the billionaire class that keeps them in power.
- Choosing to defund our neighborhood schools will leave a generation of kids behind, further force good teachers out of the profession, and leave our classrooms to crumble — all in favor of funding swanky private schools that do not serve all students. And when Texas Republicans choose to divert public funds to private practices — corruption is inevitable.
