- Beyond the White House, though, the prevailing silence is more nuanced and somewhat harder to understand. Six Senate Democrats have a solid reason: Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Joe Manchin (West Virginia), and Jon Tester (Montana) are running for reelection in states Trump won in 2020; Tammy Baldwin (Wisconsin), Bob Casey (Pennsylvania), and Jacky Rosen (Nevada) are running in states Trump barely lost. Bashing the former president could be counterproductive for them; better to focus their campaigns on local issues as they try to win over independents.

(Tuesday, September 5, 12:53 PM | By: Blank)
- EAST PALESTINE, Ohio – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown announced Tuesday that the village has been awarded an $879,509 emergency grant. The grant is being provided through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and is being sent to the Ohio Department of Mental Health after a request from the state of Ohio for additional funding to address immediate and ongoing behavioral and mental health needs in the village, as well as expand and enhance the capacity of local crisis response systems. ‘East Palestine is the type of community that’s so often forgotten or exploited by corporate America,’ said Brown, D-Ohio. ‘I’m going to fight as long as it takes to make sure residents get the support they need to make their community whole.’ The announcement came after President Joe Biden was questioned by the media about his failure to make a promised appearance in the community after a Norfolk Southern train derailed in February. Brown said he continues to work for East Palestine, including calling on FEMA to approve a request by Gov. Mike DeWine for a major disaster declaration, which would unlock additional resources from the federal government to address ongoing needs. Cleanup is continuing in the village.

- By JULIE CARR SMYTH – Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio voting-rights groups moved to dismiss their lawsuit against Ohio’s unconstitutional congressional map on Tuesday, arguing that prolonging the legal wrangling over where to draw district boundaries isn’t in the best interests of Ohio voters.
- The ACLU of Ohio, on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Ohio and others, told the Ohio Supreme Court that they are willing to live with the U.S.
- ‘Petitioners have no desire to launch another round of maps and challenges, given the recent history of map-drawing in Ohio,’ the Tuesday filing said.
- GOP supermajorities at the Statehouse grew, and the state’s high court, which would decide their case, saw the retirement of a Republican chief justice who had provided a swing vote against GOP-leaning maps. The dismissal request also comes as advocates prepare a redistricting reform amendment for Ohio’s 2024 ballot. Before Tuesday’s filing, the Ohio Supreme Court had asked both sides in the lawsuit to file briefs explaining how a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June involving the Ohio map would impact the state case.

(Tuesday, September 5, 9:30 AM | By: yellowdog@txdemocrats.org)
- Ken Paxton has created such a legacy of crime and corruption within his Office of Attorney General that Texas House Republicans determined Paxton’s crimes against the public were grave enough to warrant the first impeachment of an elected official in Texas in over 50 years. Today, the Impeachment Trial of Ken Paxton begins in the Texas Senate. No one is above the law, {first_name} — especially a state’s chief law enforcement officer. The AG’s office is rife with criminality and corruption, and that is solely because of our Attorney General, and his group of Paxton Republican cronies who have carried water for him.
