The grant is being provided through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and is being sent to the Ohio Department of Mental Health after a request from the state of Ohio for additional funding to address immediate and ongoing behavioral and mental health needs in the village, as well as expand and enhance the capacity of local crisis response systems. ‘East Palestine is the type of community that’s so often forgotten or exploited by corporate America,’ said Brown, D-Ohio. ‘I’m going to fight as long as it takes to make sure residents get the support they need to make their community whole.’ The announcement came after President Joe Biden was questioned by the media about his failure to make a promised appearance in the community after a Norfolk Southern train derailed in February. Brown said he continues to work for East Palestine, including calling on FEMA to approve a request by Gov.   • The ACLU of Ohio, on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Ohio and others, told the Ohio Supreme Court that they are willing to live with the U.S.
  • ‘Petitioners have no desire to launch another round of maps and challenges, given the recent history of map-drawing in Ohio,’ the Tuesday filing said.
  • GOP supermajorities at the Statehouse grew, and the state’s high court, which would decide their case, saw the retirement of a Republican chief justice who had provided a swing vote against GOP-leaning maps. The dismissal request also comes as advocates prepare a redistricting reform amendment for Ohio’s 2024 ballot. Before Tuesday’s filing, the Ohio Supreme Court had asked both sides in the lawsuit to file briefs explaining how a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June involving the Ohio map would impact the state case.

  • It’s likely that “a significant number of voters will be voting for a different person than they voted for in 2022,’ said Doug Spencer, an election law professor at the University of Colorado who manages the All About Redistricting website.
  • Boundaries for the nation’s House districts were redrawn in all states before the 2022 election to account for population changes noted in the 2020 census. In some states, majority party lawmakers in charge of redistricting manipulated lines to give an edge to their party’s candidates — a tactic known as gerrymandering. That triggered lawsuits, which can take years to resolve.
  • A Florida redistricting case decided Saturday by a state judge also involved race, though it relied on provisions in the state constitution instead of the Voting Rights Act. That judge said the U.S.
  • Political observers also had been keeping an eye on Ohio, where the state Supreme Court previously ruled that Republican-drawn maps were unconstitutional. Despite that, those districts were allowed to be used in the 2022 election, and Republicans won 10 of the state’s 15 U.S.
