Supreme Court Decision Today Does Not Affect Vouchers Hurt Ohio’s Lawsuit In Ohio
Vouchers Hurt Ohio Litigation Will Continue To Move Forward
COLUMBUS – Vouchers Hurt Ohio and the Ohio Coalition for Equity & Adequacy of School Funding issued the following statement today after the U.S. Supreme Court issued a narrow ruling regarding public funds for private religious education.
“We are undaunted and moving full speed ahead. The SCOTUS decision is very limited in scope and does not address the central issues of our challenge in Ohio based on the Ohio Constitution. We believe the EdChoice private school voucher program is fraught with unconstitutional issues,” said William L. Phillis, Executive Director for the Ohio Coalition for Equity & Adequacy of School Funding. “The EdChoice private school voucher program is unconstitutional because it creates a separate system of schools when the Ohio Constitution clearly calls for a single system. It makes segregation worse, siphons money away from an underfunded public common school system, and increases the reliance on local property owners and taxes to pay for public schools.”
“These issues are distinct from the narrow SCOTUS decision today. Our lawsuit does not single out religious schools, which was the main issue in the SCOTUS case. Our litigation will be decided eventually by the Ohio Supreme Court, not the United States Supreme Court, because the private school voucher program in our state harms us all and violates the Ohio Constitution,” said Phillis.
The Ohio Coalition for Equity & Adequacy of School Funding is working with Vouchers Hurt Ohio, a growing coalition of public school districts that have come together to sue the state over the unconstitutional and harmful private school voucher program.
Sincerely,
Vouchers Hurt Ohio
