Democracy Docket is the leading progressive platform dedicated to opinion, advocacy and information about voting rights, elections, redistricting and democracy.
There is a voting rights fight brewing here in Ohio but our access to the polls is being challenged all over the country.
Eighteen states have already enacted 30 laws this year that will make it harder for Americans to vote. Between January 1 and July 14, 2021, at least 18 states enacted 30 laws that restrict access to the vote. These laws make mail voting and early voting more difficult, impose harsher voter ID requirements, and make faulty voter purges more likely, among other things. More than 400 bills with provisions that restrict voting access have been introduced in 49 states in the 2021 legislative sessions.

ATTEND YOUR LOCAL TOWNSHIP MEETINGS
A township is a unit of government found primarily in the northeast and north central United States and is a subdivision of a county. Clermont County has fourteen townships. Each township has three elected trustees.
As the saying goes “all politics is local”. It is important for us to be aware of how local government operates and affects our daily lives. Your township trustees oversee your police and fire departments, zoning and road maintenance. If you want to have a say in these areas then you have to show up and make your voice heard. Please make a commitment to attend your local township meeting. You may be surprised at what you learn. We think it is important to attend these meetings so that we as an organization can find out what the issues are in Clermont County.

WHAT’S NEW FROM CLERMONT TO COLUMBUS

MILFORD SCHOOLS BOND WOULD BUILD NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL
Milford Schools wants to pass a 2.47-mill bond on the Nov. 2 ballot to demolish the existing Junior High School building and build a new grades six to eight Middle School. The bond for 30 years, totaling $55.9 million, would only be for those two primary purposes and site circulation/traffic flow considerations. READ MORE
COMMISSIONERS APPROVE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT ACTION PLAN
BATAVIA, OH – Proposed projects such as fire station improvements, sidewalk construction and septic/sewer remediation are included in the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Action Plan for Fiscal Year 2021. The Board of County Commissioners on Aug. 11 adopted the $1.1 million program. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides an annual grant on a formula basis to Clermont County to develop a viable urban community by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons. DISTRICT MAPS SPLIT HOUSES IN TWO, MAKING REPRESENTATION MORE DIFFICULT
Mindy Nagel’s congressman changes depending on the side of her house in which she’s sitting. The border Nagel sits on is in between Cincinnati and North College Hill in Hamilton County. Because of how district maps were drawn during the last bout of redistricting, the west half of her house is in Ohio’s second district, Brad Wenstrup’s district. The east half is in Steve Chabot’s area, the 1st district. “When they drew the boundary, they screwed it up,” Nagel told the OCJ. READ MORE
“EYE-POPPING” FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES REVEAL GOP SENATE CANDIDATES ARE OUT-OF-TOUCH MULTI-MILLIONAIRES
Columbus, OH — New reports from the Columbus Dispatch and Cleveland.com reveal Republican U.S. Senate candidates’ “eye-popping” financial disclosures from a field full of out-of-touch multi-millionaires.
“No matter which country club elitist emerges from this nasty primary, the Ohio GOP will be stuck with an out-of-touch multi-millionaire who puts their wealthy self-interest ahead of working Ohioans. Instead of focusing on building good-paying jobs and fixing our infrastructure, all of the Ohio GOP Senate candidates have made it clear their priorities are lining their pockets and not Ohio families said Michael Beyer, spokesperson for the Ohio Democratic Party. GOV. MIKE DEWINE SKIPS REDISTRICTING HEARING TO ATTEND BENGALS TRAINING CAMP
While Ohioans pleaded for fairer legislative districts, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine attended a Cincinnati Bengals training camp instead. DeWine is one of seven members of the Ohio Redistricting Commission, a group tasked with drawing districts for state House and Senate seats. The group held two public hearings Monday, one each in Cleveland and Youngstown. READ MORE

CANDIDATE TRAINING
OHIO DEMOCRATIC PARTY MAIN STREET 2021
August 28, 2021
9 AM TO 4 PM via Zoom
Now that the deadline to file petitions for elected offices on the ballot this November has passed, the Main Street Initiative is conducting a fall training on Saturday, August 28 for local candidates. ODP’s goal is to provide the tools necessary so that over the next few months Democrats can run successful campaigns and win! Attendees can register here. We are here to train Democrats running for municipal, school board, judicial, and other offices this year.
Our partners at the LEAD Ohio PAC will co-host this training on Zoom from 9 AM to 4 PM (with plenty of breaks!). The training will focus on how candidates can maximize the final months before Election Day: mastering stump speeches, tips on fundraising for immediate needs, ramping up communications and digital activity, responding to attacks, GOTV and direct voter contact, and other topics. The session is also appropriate for staff and volunteers helping with races this fall.
Please note: this training is not targeted at those just broadly considering running for office or planning to do so in 2022 or another year. We’ll soon announce other programs for those individuals.

Evil Geniuses – The Unmaking of America by Kurt Andersen
During the twentieth century, America managed to make its economic and social systems both more and more fair and more and more prosperous. A huge, secure, and contented middle class emerged. All boats rose together. But then the New Deal gave way to the Raw Deal. Beginning in the early 1970s, by means of a long war conceived of and executed by a confederacy of big business CEOs, the super rich, and right-wing zealots, the rules and norms that made the American middle class possible were undermined and dismantled. The clock was turned back on a century of economic progress, making greed good, workers powerless, and the market all-powerful while weaponizing nostalgia, lifting up an oligarchy that served only its own interests, and leaving the huge majority of Americans with dwindling economic prospects and hope.
COVID19 IN OHIO
COVID-19 CASES RISING AGAIN IN THE COUNTY
After being relatively flat for June and early July, COVID-19 cases in Clermont County, like the state and nation, are ticking back up again heading into August. On June 17, the daily case count was four. By July 15, that number climbed to 13 and then, four days later, 26. On July 29, Clermont County Public Health reported 41 cases. The county hasn’t seen a day with 41 reported cases since Feb. 19, when the county hit 50. READ MORE
FDA GRANTS FULL APPROVAL FOR PFIZER’S COVID-19 VACCINE
People who have avoided getting a COVID-19 vaccine have one less excuse as of Monday morning. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted full approval for Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine on Aug. 23 — the first approval among the three COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States. The approval replaces the emergency use authorization that the agency had given to Pfizer in December. READ MORE
