Meldahl Hydropower Plant taxing snafu leaves local governments to pay back nearly $1 million
Some local townships and school districts, as well as Clermont County, are trying to figure out how they’ll pay back nearly $1 million to the company that owns the Meldahl Hydropower Plant in Kentucky, this after it was realized that plant equipment had been wrongly apportioned as an Ohio asset. Commissioners oppose restrictions to Second Amendment
The Clermont County Board of County Commissioners (on January 13) adopted a resolution declaring its opposition to any restrictions to the Second Amendment. All three commissioners, President David Painter, Vice President Ed Humphrey and member Claire Corcoran, voted for the resolution. “We stand as a Second Amendment Sanctuary County,” said Commissioner Painter, moments after the vote, to the applause of gun rights activists in attendance. Proposed Constitutional Amendment Seeks To Expand, Solidify Voter Rights
A group known as Ohioans for Secure and Fair Elections has filed a petition with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to propose a voting-related constitutional amendment for this November’s ballot. Read more.

Company reports show huge pay inequality
Most of Ohio’s largest employers paid their chief executive officers more than 200 times what they paid typical employees last year. More than a quarter of the companies paid the CEO more than 500 times as much. Six companies had pay ratios over 1,000. Those are the key results at 53 of Ohio’s largest employers that reported pay ratios to the Securities & Exchange Commission. That’s especially striking because half a century ago, the ratio of CEO to worker pay at the largest U.S. companies was 20 to 1. Since then, while CEO pay has grown dramatically, pay for typical workers has barely budged.Read more.

A WORD FROM OUR PARTY CHAIR – RAYMOND LEMBKE
The March 17 primary election is about two months away. Early voting starts February 19. This primary election is important. First, this primary is important because we are choosing the Democratic candidate for President of the United States. We know that Mitch McConnell will never allow the Senate to remove trump from office. We will have four more years of lies, corruption, and indefensible policies unless trump is defeated in the 2020 election. I strongly suggest that you think about, and vote for, the Democratic candidate who has the best chance to beat trump in November. I think that takes precedence over everything else at this point in our history.
The March primary is important for other reasons as well. Most of our candidates are unopposed in their primaries. However, one of our candidates needs more than one vote. Every Democratic primary ballot throughout the County will have a box on it for the office of County Commissioner, term beginning January 2, 2021. Inside that box, you will see a circle and a blank line. It is vitally important that you do two things:
(1) darken-in that circle and (2) write the name Jeff Richards on the blank line. Jeff needs at least 50 votes for his name to appear on the November general election ballot. We can’t afford for this to be close. We need Jeff to get many times the minimum vote required. Given all that we have seen from the entrenched Republicans over the last year, I hope you understand why Jeff’s name must be on the November ballot for Commissioner. Read more.

MEET THE CANDIDATE
Ryan Ottney for Ohio Senate District 14
Ryan Ottney, of New Boston, Scioto County, Ohio, is an elected member of the New Boston Village Council and chairman of the Scioto County Democratic Party. With a BA in English communications and journalism minor, Ryan worked for nearly 15 years as an award-winning writer and editor for the Portsmouth Daily Times newspaper and now works as director of communications at the South Central Ohio ESC in New Boston.
According to Ryan, the most important issues facing southern Ohio are jobs and the opioid epidemic, as well as affordable health care and quality education.
“This district has been under Republican control for too long. Are things really any better? Don’t you think we can do better? It’s time for a change. It’s time we elected someone with new ideas, who will stand up for working families and not for special interest groups and corporations that profit off of the struggles of a shrinking middle class.”
Ryan calls himself a fiscal conservative and a social progressive. “We don’t need big government. What we need is a government that works for all people. We need to treat everyone with respect and kindness, regardless of the color of their skin, how they worship, or who they love.

HOW TO DECLARE OR CHANGE POLITICAL PARTY IN OHIO
We have been getting frequent inquiries from Republicans about how to switch parties in Ohio, so we put together a primer and posted it on our website. Here’s an excerpt:
Under Ohio election law, you declare your affiliation with a political party by requesting the ballot of that party in a partisan primary election. So, for example, you would declare your affiliation with the Democratic Party by asking for a Democratic ballot when you vote in the primary election. Partisan primary elections are held in every even numbered year. The 2020 Ohio partisan primary election is on Tuesday, March 17. Early voting for the 2020 primary starts on February 19. You may vote one party’s ballot in this primary election even if you’ve voted the other party’s ballot in previous elections. Read more.
